Birthdays always make me pause and reflect on how grateful I am for the people who have supported this incredible journey as an artist and teacher. Your encouragement, kind words, and enthusiasm for watercolor have meant more to me than you know.

So instead of asking for gifts, I'd like to give one.

Values First: Pouring Watercolor with Purpose

If you've ever watched one of my poured watercolor paintings come together and wondered how I know where to place my lights, darks, and colors before the first pour, this class is for you.

In this workshop, I'll be sharing parts of my planning process that I don't usually cover in my regular classes.

We'll explore:

• How I create a value map before I ever put paint to paper.
• Why values—not color—are often the key to creating a successful painting.
• How I make important creative decisions based on value structure before the painting even begins.
• My favorite way to make use of the beautiful leftover paint from my pours by creating expressive value studies that become paintings in their own right—not just black-and-white exercises.

Whether you create poured watercolors or paint with traditional techniques, understanding values will strengthen every painting you create.
